Psalm 22:22-26

I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.

The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!

Praise God! He cares for the afflicted! (v. 22-24)

Come Thou Fount

“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.”

This Psalm has awesome parallels to the gospel! It says that God, “has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him”. Hallelujah! God sees people in their affliction and doesn’t despise them! He cares for them! In the same way, Jesus saw us in our sin and He loves us so much that he would die on the cross for us. We see God’s character in this psalm and we see it lived out on the cross. Praise God!

The call for our life is to turn away from sin and towards Jesus! The song Come Thou Fount is a cry to God to help us in our affliction. “Tune my heart to sing your grace”. “Hither by thy help I’ve come”. Our flesh is prone to wander (“Prone to wander Lord I feel it”) but, through Jesus living through us we can abide in Him and be assured of salvation(“here’s my heart Lord, take it, seal it; seal it for thy courts above”)!

Praise God! He Satisfies! (v. 25-26)

Christ is Enough

“From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!”

The parallels to the gospel continues in this Psalm. “The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord!”. Through the love of Jesus, We shall be satisfied! “Christ is enough for me”. “Everything I need is in you”. Our response is praise to the Lord! “I have decided to follow Jesus, No turning back”.

Devotional Questions

  1. Do you find comfort in knowing God cares for you even in your affliction?
  2. Do you find satisfaction in Jesus? Can you confidently say, “Christ is enough for me. Everything I need I find in Christ.”?

Psalms 77:11-15

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.

I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.

Your way, O God is holy. What god is great like our God?

You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.

You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph.

Our God works Wonders (v.11-14)

What a Beautiful Name

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.”

In this Psalm, the Psalmist is praising God for his wondrous work. From his praise comes great truths about who God is. No god is great like our God (“You have no rival, You have no equal”). Our God is the God of Creation (“You were the word at the beginning”). In response, we give all the praise and glory to God (“Yours is the kingdom, Yours is the glory, Yours is the name above all names”).

Our God Redeems (v. 15)

Living Hope

“You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph.”

Our God redeems! We know that through Jesus we have redemption and salvation (“Hallelujah, Praise the One who set me free”, “there’s salvation in Your name”). God does mighty works. We can put our hope of salvation in him (“Jesus Christ my living hope”).

Devotional Questions

  1. How has God worked in your life?
  2. Is your hope in salvation through Jesus?

Worship is a response to the revelation of Jesus Christ through his word.  This is an opportunity to take some time to look at a passage of scripture and how the songs we will sing this Sunday are a response to that truth.  The songs will be linked below but, you can also listen to them on our Spotify Playlist.

Psalm 62:5-8

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

Praise God! He is our Refuge! (v. 7-8)

Be Thou My Vision

“On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”

God is a refuge for us! We can trust him at all times! We don’t need the world’s wisdom (“Be thou[God] my wisdom, and thou my true word”), its riches and praise (“Riches I head not nor man’s empty praise”), or is promises (“May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s sun”). We find all of these things in God. Our Salvation! Our Glory! Our mighty rock! Our Refuge!

Praise God! He is our Strength! (v. 5-6)

Cornerstone

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.”

We will not be shaken because God is our rock, our salvation, and our fortress. We have confidence and strength not from our own power but through his power (“Christ alone cornerstone, weak made strong in the Savior’s love”). We trust in Him alone. Our Hope is in Him alone.

Devotional Questions

  1. What is your refuge? Who/What do you turn to for hope?
  2. Are you relying on God’s strength or your own?
