Finish the Course

Acts 20:24

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself,

if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus,

to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Choosing Life Over Life

In the passage, Paul is preparing for imprisonment. He knows that he won’t see the people he’s talking to again. In this moment, he starts talking about his life and its purpose. As I was reflecting on this passage, I started thinking about the fact that as christians we have been given two lives. We have life from birth and we have a new life through Jesus Christ. Both are gifts from God. Paul is clearly choosing the new and transformed life that he has through salvation in Jesus. Our hope like his should be in the life that we have in Christ Jesus and not the one that is of this world. But, the life we have on this earth is a tool that we have to glorify God. God has given us ministry to complete while we are still here. Our charge is to Finish The Course you’ve been given.

All Glory Be to God

Acts 14:15

“Men, why are you doing these things?

We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God,

who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.

Devotion

After Paul heals a man who cannot walk, the people start worshiping him thinking that he is the incarnation of a Greek god. But, Paul rebukes them and redirects them to what they should be worshiping, the One True God. Our God ‘who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them’.

Our worship is a response to what God has done. From creation to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to today. God is doing great things and is worthy of our praise. So, we must not be like the people and misattribute what God is doing and give the glory to men or false gods.

Take some time to think about what God is doing in your life and praise Him, thank Him, give Him the glory.

Acts 7:51-53

“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.

52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute?

And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

Psalm 139:13-16

For you formed my inward parts;
    you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[a]
Wonderful are your works;
    my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
    the days that were formed for me,
    when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 124

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
    let Israel now say—
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
    when people rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
then the flood would have swept us away,
    the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird
    from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped!

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

Let Them Praise His Name

Psalm 148

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels;
    praise him, all his hosts!

Praise him, sun and moon,
    praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,
    and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord!
    For he commanded and they were created.
And he established them forever and ever;
    he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.[a]

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you great sea creatures and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and mist,
    stormy wind fulfilling his word!

Mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars!
10 Beasts and all livestock,
    creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
    princes and all rulers of the earth!
12 Young men and maidens together,
    old men and children!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up a horn for his people,
    praise for all his saints,
    for the people of Israel who are near to him.
Praise the Lord!

Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

Pslam 107:1-3

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has redeemed from trouble
and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

We have joy because of the redemption we have through the Lord! Because he is good and his love endures forever, He sent His Son to die for us. So, we are gathered in one body through Jesus Christ to enjoy community and bless his name.

The Lord Has made known His Salvation

Psalm 98:1-3

Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
    for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made known his salvation;
    he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the salvation of our God.

Psalm 89:5-11

Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones!
For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    Who among the heavenly beings[b] is like the Lord,
a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones,
    and awesome above all who are around him?
O Lord God of hosts,
    who is mighty as you are, O Lord,
    with your faithfulness all around you?
You rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, you still them.
10 You crushed Rahab like a carcass;
    you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11 The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
    the world and all that is in it, you have founded them.
